Will Getting New Smaller Jaw Angle Implants Result in Less Swelling After Surgery?

Q: Dr. Eppley, I’ve seen a lot of videos and posts about jaw implant revision surgeries you have done. If I were to downsize my implants (assuming same style), how would you compare the swelling with getting brand new implants. Would it be just as bad or less since the body’s had implants there for over 6 months?

A:The postoperative swelling from revising/removing/replacing existing jaw angle implants, compared to the initial implantation surgery, depends on the material of the implant. If it is silicone or PEEK it would be less. If it is Medpor or PEKK it will be the same or maybe even worse. It is more about the soft tissue attachments than it is about an existing pocket.
